Safari Experiences

Into the Wild. Beyond the Drive

The game drive is just the beginning. At Ashnil Camps and Surana Luxury Collection, the experiences that stay with you longest are often the quieter ones.

Breakfast on the river bank with hippos below. A champagne sundowner as the plains turn gold. A Maasai elder welcoming you into his village. A leopard, twenty metres away, while you stand completely still. These are the moments we exist to create.

Five Camps. Five Landscapes. One Extraordinary Collection of Experiences.

Kenya has always rewarded those who stay a little longer and look a little closer. Our five properties sit inside some of the country's most remarkable wilderness areas - the Masai Mara, Buffalo Springs and Tsavo East, and each has built a programme of experiences that draws directly from the landscape, the wildlife and the communities that surround it.

Browse by destination below to discover exactly what awaits you at each property. Whether you are planning your first safari or returning for the fourth time, our reservations team is ready to help you put together an itinerary that makes the most of every day.

Experiences Available at Every Ashnil and Surana Property

Whether you are in the Masai Mara watching the Great Migration, tracking the Samburu Special Five along the Ewaso Nyiro River or watching elephants arrive at Aruba Dam as the sun drops over Tsavo, certain experiences define a stay at Ashnil and Surana regardless of which property you choose. These are the experiences that form the foundation of every safari day across the collection.

Game Drive

Every safari at Ashnil and Surana begins with the game drive. Two hours morning or afternoon on the open plains in a custom 4x4 Land Cruiser, guided by an experienced naturalist with an intimate knowledge of the landscape and its wildlife. We go where the animals are, and we take the time to understand what we are seeing. For guests who prefer a more private experience, sole use of a vehicle can be arranged per game drive or for a full day, giving your group the freedom to move at your own pace and spend as long as you like with the wildlife you encounter.

Sundowner

The sundowner is as much a part of the African safari tradition as the dawn drive. After your afternoon game drive, we take you to a carefully chosen viewpoint where cocktails are served as the sky changes colour above the plains. Forty-five minutes of open bar, extraordinary scenery and the sounds of the bush settling into the evening. It is, without question, the definitive end to any safari day.

Bush Dining

Food tastes different when you eat it in the wild. Our bush barbecue, served at tables set among the trees with the smell of open fire and the sounds of the wilderness all around you, is one of the most memorable dining experiences in Kenya. A gourmet menu, armed game rangers keeping watch, and a setting that no restaurant anywhere in the world could replicate. For something more intimate, a private poolside barbecue dinner can be arranged for couples, anniversaries or any occasion worth marking quietly.

Personal Touches

The details matter. A celebration cake presented at your table with song and traditional dance from our camp team. A basket of seasonal Kenyan fruits waiting in your room. Airstrip transfers arranged seamlessly so your journey begins and ends without a single unnecessary moment of stress. These small gestures are part of how we look after our guests, and they are available across all five properties.

Ashnil Mara Camp arrow_forward

Safari Experiences at Ashnil Mara Camp

On the banks of the Mara River in prime migration territory, Ashnil Mara Camp sits at the centre of one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. The Masai Mara is home to the highest density of large predators on earth, and between July and October the banks of the Mara River become the stage for the most dramatic moment in the natural world - the wildebeest river crossing. The experiences at Ashnil Mara Camp are shaped by the river, the open plains and the extraordinary rhythm of wildlife that defines the Mara throughout the year.

Hippo Pool Breakfast

No experience at Ashnil Mara Camp is more talked about than the hippo pool breakfast. After your morning game drive, breakfast is laid out on the banks of the Mara River as hippos surface in the water below, herons pick their way along the opposite bank and the heat of the day begins to build. It is one of those moments that is genuinely difficult to describe to someone who has not experienced it, and almost impossible to forget once you have.

On Foot in the Mara

The Masai Mara looks and feels entirely different at ground level. Our guided safari walks take guests along the park periphery with a resident naturalist and an armed game ranger, tracking prints, reading the bush and moving through the landscape in the way that wildlife moves through it. Those with a passion for birds will find the Mara ecosystem extraordinary, more than 470 species have been recorded here, and our resident Maasai naturalist knows where to find them.

Photography in the Mara

The Mara is one of the great photography destinations on earth, and we take that seriously. A dedicated half-day or full-day guided photography experience is led by an experienced photographer and safari guide, covering technique as well as location. Professional Nikon equipment is available for hire, from a Nikon Z6 III body for the experienced photographer to a full beginner kit including the Z50 II body, 50 to 250mm lens, battery and backpack. Lens hire is available separately for guests who bring their own camera body.

Culture and Community

A visit to a traditional Maasai village is one of the most rewarding experiences available at Ashnil Mara Camp, offering a guided cultural lecture and traditional dance performance that provides genuine insight into a community whose way of life is as extraordinary as the landscape they inhabit. Available to Ground Package guests. In the evenings, live Maasai dance and music can be arranged during your bush dinner - a vivid and joyful experience to share around the fire.

Ashnil Mara Experiences
Surana Mara Experiences
Surana Mara Camp arrow_forward

Safari Experiences at Surana Mara Camp

Perched above the Mara River with just twelve suites, Surana Mara Camp is the most intimate address in the Mara ecosystem. With only a small number of guests in camp at any one time, the experiences here feel genuinely personal. The guiding is exceptional. The photography programme is the most comprehensive of any camp in the collection. And the wellness facilities - the only ones of their kind within the Surana and Ashnil portfolio, make this the natural choice for guests who want to combine an extraordinary safari with time to properly rest and recover.

Hippo Pool Breakfast

The hippo pool breakfast is a signature experience of any stay at Surana Mara Camp. Breakfast is served on the Mara River banks with hippos in the water below and the morning bush awakening all around you. With fewer guests in camp, the experience feels even more intimate than elsewhere.

On Foot and in the Field

Guided safari walks and bird walks are led by our resident Maasai naturalist along the park periphery with an armed game ranger. The Mara Triangle, which Surana Mara overlooks directly, is considered by many experienced guides to be the best game-viewing area within the entire Masai Mara ecosystem.

Photography at Surana Mara

The photography programme at Surana Mara Camp is designed for guests who take their photography seriously. Half-day and full-day guided tours are led by an experienced photographer, with professional Nikon equipment available for hire. The camp's position above the river and within the Mara Triangle provides some of the finest photographic conditions in Kenya, particularly during the migration season.

Culture

Maasai village visits and a guided Maasai Mara cultural encounter are both available from camp. In the evenings, live Maasai dance and music can be arranged at your bush dinner.

Wellness by Surana

The Surana Wellness Centre is the only dedicated wellness facility across all five properties in the collection, and it is a genuine destination in its own right. Full-body massage journeys, reflexology, facial and aesthetic treatments, a sauna and cold plunge circuit, yoga sessions, guided meditation and an equipped gym are all available. The Surana morning run club, led by a guide through the camp's surroundings, offers a completely different way to begin the day. The infinity pool with sun beds overlooking the Mara River and the Mara Triangle is included in every stay.

Ashnil Samburu Camp arrow_forward

Safari Experiences at Ashnil Samburu Camp

Set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River beneath the dramatic silhouette of Mount Ol Olokwe, Ashnil Samburu Camp offers access to three reserves — Buffalo Springs, Samburu National Reserve and Shaba National Reserve — and the remarkable wildlife of Kenya's northern frontier. This is a landscape of riverine forest, red-dust plains and acacia woodland, home to the Samburu Special Five species found nowhere else in Kenya: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and beisa oryx. The wildlife here is completely different from the southern parks, and so is the experience of being in the field.

Into the Bush

A guided safari walk along the park periphery with our resident naturalist and an armed game ranger feels particularly special in Samburu, where the dryness of the landscape, the quality of the light and the presence of specialist northern species create an atmosphere unlike anything found further south. Bird walks within camp are led by our resident Samburu naturalist, and Buffalo Springs and its surrounding reserves are exceptional for specialist birders seeking species not found in the Mara or Tsavo.

Culture in the North

A visit to a traditional Samburu village offers an insight into a community whose culture, dress and way of life are utterly distinctive. Unlike the Maasai of the south, the Samburu people of the north have maintained a way of life that feels genuinely remote from the modern world, and a visit with a knowledgeable guide is a privilege worth arranging. Available to Ground Package guests.

Bush Breakfast with Bubbly

An early morning game drive followed by a champagne breakfast at a breathtaking location on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The northern light at this hour is remarkable.

Ashnil Samburu Experiences
Surana Buffalo Springs Experiences
Surana Buffalo Springs arrow_forward

Safari Experiences at Surana Buffalo Springs

Surana Buffalo Springs is unlike any other camp in the collection, and unlike almost anything else on Kenya's safari circuit. Seventeen suites, each with a private plunge pool, are set within sculptural earth-toned architecture that draws from the landscape itself. The northern sky at night here is extraordinary, the wildlife is exceptional and the experiences available from camp are shaped by the particular drama of the Samburu ecosystem and the unique facilities that Surana Buffalo Springs alone can offer.

Evenings at Surana Buffalo Springs

The Ewaso Sky Deck is one of the camp's defining features, and two experiences make the most of it. At twilight, the Ewaso Sunset Cocktail brings guests to the deck for signature cocktails as the light fades over the river and the wilderness settles into the evening. Later, the Star Gazing Experience offers fine wine on the same deck as the Milky Way opens above the northern frontier. The skies here, far from any significant light pollution, are genuinely remarkable. For those who prefer to dine on the ground, Dinner Under the Stars brings the kitchen outside as distant wildlife calls echo across the plains beneath the same extraordinary sky.

In the Field

Guided safari walks along the park periphery and bird walks within camp are both available, led by our resident Samburu naturalist. A Samburu village visit can be arranged for Ground Package guests, offering the same quality of cultural encounter available at Ashnil Samburu Camp with the added context of a guide who knows this community intimately.

Bush Breakfast with Bubbly

A champagne breakfast at a breathtaking location in the northern reserve after your morning game drive. A Surana Buffalo Springs classic.

Ashnil Aruba Lodge arrow_forward

Safari Experiences at Ashnil Aruba Lodge

Ashnil Aruba Lodge overlooks the Aruba Dam, a permanent water source within Tsavo East National Park that draws one of the most impressive concentrations of wildlife anywhere in Kenya. Elephant herds arrive at the water's edge throughout the day. Buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard and more than 500 bird species are recorded regularly within the park. Tsavo East is Kenya's largest national park — covering roughly 40 per cent of all national park land in the country — and it remains one of the most authentic and unhurried safari destinations on the continent. The lodge is two and a half hours from Mombasa, five and a half from Nairobi, and now directly accessible by SGR rail, making it an excellent choice as part of a wider Kenya itinerary.

Dining at Aruba

Every meal at Ashnil Aruba Lodge carries the added dimension of its setting. The restaurant overlooks the dam, where wildlife appears at the water's edge with remarkable frequency throughout the day. For those who want to take the experience further, a champagne bush breakfast can be arranged after your morning game drive, and our kitchen team offers a picnic or hot lunch served at a scenic location within the park during your safari. An all-inclusive drinks supplement — covering local beers, house wines, soft drinks and select spirits during lunch and dinner — is available to add to your stay.

Exploring Tsavo

The scale of Tsavo East rewards those who are curious about what lies beyond the dam. Mudanda Rock, a 1.6km quartzite Inselberg rising from the surrounding savannah, offers short hikes and extraordinary views across the plains as well as a further concentration of wildlife around its base. Luggard Falls, where the Galana River forces its way through a narrow gorge of ancient rock, is one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in the park. Both are worth the drive. Guests with an interest in history should also consider visiting the Voi War Memorial Cemetery in Taita-Taveta, a solemn and moving site that commemorates soldiers from across the Commonwealth who died during the East Africa campaign of the First World War.

Special Occasions in Tsavo

Ashnil Aruba Lodge has quietly become one of Kenya's most sought-after settings for honeymoons and destination weddings. The dam, the open sky and the extraordinary wildlife backdrop create a natural stage for occasions that deserve something genuinely unforgettable. A honeymoon experience including sparkling wine on arrival, a romantic private bush dinner and photography at the dam can be arranged on request. Bush weddings are arranged entirely to the couple's wishes, with our team handling every detail from the ceremony setting to the celebration that follows. Speak to our reservations team to discuss your requirements.

Arriving by Rail

Guests arriving on the SGR train from Nairobi or Mombasa can be met at Voi Station for a 60-minute road transfer directly to the lodge. It is a comfortable, scenic and increasingly popular alternative to road travel, and it works particularly well as part of a Nairobi-to-coast itinerary that takes in Tsavo along the way.

When to Visit

Kenya's Seasons at a Glance

Kenya's wildlife is remarkable throughout the year, but each season brings something different. Here is a brief guide to help you choose the right time for the experiences that matter most to you. Our reservations team can advise further on the best season for your particular interests and the properties you are considering.

January to March

Dry Season

Clear skies, warm days and cooler nights make this one of the finest periods for game viewing, photography and walking safaris across all five properties. Animals gather around permanent water sources, making them easier to locate and observe. Tsavo's Aruba Dam is at its most dramatic during this period.

June to October

Migration Season

Peak season in the Masai Mara. The Great Wildebeest Migration reaches the Mara River between July and September, with wildebeest crossing in their hundreds of thousands under the watchful eyes of crocodile, lion and leopard. Wildlife density across our Mara properties is at its highest, and demand for rooms is at its greatest. Book well in advance for this period.

November to December

Green Season

After the short rains, Kenya's landscapes become lush and extraordinarily photogenic. Visitor numbers drop across all properties, making this an excellent time for a more private safari. Birding is exceptional across all five camps during this period, and the quality of light for photography — particularly in the early morning and late afternoon — is some of the finest of the year.

All experiences can be added to your stay. Many are included within our Game Package rate. Prices are available on request and vary by season.
